Genre guide
Vocal isolation for metal
Metal is a genuinely difficult genre for AI vocal separation. Screamed, growled and distorted vocals occupy the same frequency range as heavily distorted guitars, which confuses separators trained primarily on clean pop vocals.
What makes this genre distinct
Death, black, thrash and hardcore metal use extreme vocal techniques — screams, growls, shrieks — that share spectral characteristics with distorted guitars. Clean-sung power metal, melodic metal and symphonic metal are easier to separate because the vocals remain tonal.
How well VocalSplit handles it
Hardest genre on our list. Expect some bleed in both directions — guitar tones creeping into the vocal stem, vocal growls staying faintly in the instrumental. Clean-sung metal (Nightwish, power metal, pop-metal) separates much better than extreme metal.
What to expect from the output
Clean-sung metal: good, usable stems. Extreme metal: results vary wildly, sometimes usable, sometimes noticeably messy. For practice and study, even the messier results are often enough to learn something from. For commercial use, you may need to combine with other tools.
What people use the stems for
- Backing tracks for clean-sung metal karaoke
- Vocal study for aspiring metal vocalists
- Transcription of complex vocal passages
- Rehearsal tracks for tribute and cover bands
- Reference material for producers mixing metal
