How-to guide
How to make a clean radio edit without vocals
Radio and TV producers often need a clean instrumental version of a song to use as background music or under voiceover. VocalSplit gives you one in seconds without having to track down an official instrumental release.
For broadcast use, you still need sync licensing for the original song. VocalSplit produces the instrumental bed; the music supervisor handles the rights.
Step-by-step
- Get the source song file. Broadcast-quality WAV or FLAC is ideal. MP3 at 320 kbps also works in a pinch.
- Upload to VocalSplit. Any browser, no install.
- Process the split. $0.99 per song, stems returned in about 15–25 seconds.
- Download the instrumental stem. Lossless 24-bit WAV — the format most broadcast workflows expect.
- Drop it into the edit. Import into Pro Tools, Avid, Premiere or your NLE of choice as a background music bed.
Tips for better results
- Always cross-check with the rights holder for clearance before air.
- For film trailers, you may want to combine the instrumental stem with dramatic swells from a sound library.
- The vocal stem is sometimes useful as a keyword-like accent, cut and pitched.
